  3. GEF - Western Indian Ocean Marine Highway Development and Coastal and Marine Contamination Prevention Project Introduction The western Indian Ocean region includes five coastal countries (Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, and Somalia), one large island Madagascar, three small island states (Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles), and France (La Réunion). The region contains two of the world’s 64 major large marine ecosystems, the Agulhas current and the Somali current. GEF-WB Indian Ocean Commission Maritime Highway Project

  5. GEF - Western Indian Ocean Marine Highway Development and Coastal and Marine Contamination Prevention Project Regional Maritime Traffic Cabotage Various types of vessels, including fishing vessels, ferries, container carriers, tankers, liquefied gas carriers and general freighters are navigating in the subject area. All these ships have to refuel in the respective ports.. Tankers The WIO region is on the principal route of tankers from south Africa to Middle-East, Europe & Asia. Traffic is evaluated to some 5.000 trips per year and some 500 millions tons of oil products transiting in the regional waters. Summary Although the vessel traffic conditions in the WIO region is constant over the year. It is to be noted that the traffic of very large tanker and the traffic of supper tanker is increasing. It is considered that the increase of shipping activity in the WIO area is a reflection of high economic development of Asia, Europe & USA. However, it also shows the high probability of a possible disaster at sea in this region. GEF-WB Indian Ocean Commission Maritime Highway Project
