Historical Context • Early 1800s: King George IV rules as regent in the stead of George II • Industrial revolution “in full swing”, business owners become rich and adopt the life of the aristocracy • Much work was being done by machine, leaving many unemployed and starving • Agricultural depression and Napoleonic wars

  3. Women • Marriage did not usually occur out of love • Jobs were few and measly • Some inherited wealth, but marriage was key to financial stability • Education was not deemed important for women

  4. Literature • Novels were considered a negative thing to read • Sentimental romances and gothic novels • Samuel Richardson and Fanny Burney • Point of view and dramatic irony
