  2. Sakura means cherry blossom. We will listen to Sakura played on a traditional Japanese flute called a shakuhachi. Sakura

  3. Pentatonic Scale

  4. Your current assignment: • Use the Internet to find a picture of a Japanese instrument (not a shakuhachi). • You will share your picture with the class and tell the class what kind of instrument you found and any relevant details. • Use the Internet to find other examples of Sakura in Japanese culture. • Share your finding with the class.

  5. 12 Bar Blues Tonic is the first note of the scale. Most songs resolve to tonic (meaning tonic will be the last note of the song and give the song a “finished” feeling). Tonic is often, but not always the first note of a song. If our pentatonic scale starts on Eb, which note is tonic?

  6. Garage Band Project • Open the file called “pentatonicblues” • The file is a 12 bar blues progression in Eb • Practice improvising on the black keys only • Add another track and record yourself improvising on the black keys only (you may choose your own instrument sound) • Be sure that your improvisation ends on TONIC • Save the file to your student folder

  7. Evaluation Use the rubric to evaluate yourself on today’s lesson.
