  1. BECOMING A MAN OF PRAYER Based on “Becoming A Man of Prayer: A Seven-Week Strategy Based on the Instructions of Jesus” – By Bob Beltz MBC First Light Summer Session

  2. Opening Prayer Ken Prussner

  3. This Week: The Lord’s PrayerReview / Summary

  4. Context Matthew 6:5–6 5 When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 6But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you • Pray with INTEGRITY before God • Do not pray to impress people but to seek God • God is the One who will reward your prayers

  5. Context Matthew 6:7-8 • Meaningless repetition does not add value • God already knows what you need – we are not praying for His benefit 7 And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. 8So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

  6. The Lord’s Prayer fits here

  7. Context Matthew 6:14-15 • Don’t miss the part about forgiveness. It is vitally important to your own life. • Forgiving others is the only specific action on our part that is called out in the Lord’s prayer. 14 For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

  8. Context Matthew 6:16-18 16 Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 17But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face 18 so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. • Fast with INTEGRITY before God • Don’t fast to impress men, but to seek God • God is the One who will reward your fasting

  9. Pray with INTEGRITY before God • Avoid meaningless repetition • Especially practice forgiveness • Fast with INTEGRITY before God Comments About the Context? PRAY

  10. The Lord’s Prayer – Matthew 6:9-13 • Our Father who is in heaven, • Hallowed be Your name. • Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. • Give us this day our daily bread. • And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. • And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. • For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

  11. Our Father who is in heaven • Jesus established this father-child relationship for us by His life, death and resurrection, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit • We are to ask from God as a child from his father, and He wants us to have confidence that He will gladly give us what we need.

  12. Hallowed be Your name The Name – YHWH – I AM – treat with great respect

  13. Your kingdom come Spiritual Kingdom – Christ rules now in believers lives Millennial Kingdom – Christ rules on earth after 2nd coming Universal Kingdom – God’s rule over all - in time - in eternity One King and One Kingdom – three manifestations

  14. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven • To abide in Christ • To experience His presence • To discern His guidance • To know His will • To transform the defects of my character • To become spiritually mature • To be humble • To be fruitful in ministry • To obey willingly and joyfully Becoming a Man of Prayer, p. 52

  15. Give us this day our daily bread • “Daily” teaches us to train our hearts to depend consistently on God, rather than just in times of need • God designed our physical needs to point to our deeper spiritual needs (daily need for sustenance)

  16. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors • Sin is not like a traffic ticket where you pay a small fine if you get caught and nobody is hurt. It is more like adultery – betrayal of your relationship to God! • We cannot fix it. We NEED the blood of Jesus to wipe our slate clean. • Confess – agree with the Holy Spirit about your sin. • Having received grace, we are to dispense grace to others.

  17. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil And do not … - StatedNegatively – Lord, help me to not go there again! - Recognizes my human weakness/sin nature but deliver … - Stated Positively – Lord, protect me - Recognizes Satan is a real and powerful enemy

  18. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. • It is God’s kingdom, not man’s, not mine. • God is the all-powerful creator and sustainer of the universe, including mankind, not me. • God is the one who deserves all the glory, not men, not me. • This truth remains forever – so be it!!

  19. Comments on The Lord’s Prayer?

  20. Thought-Provoking Prayer Quotes • “Prayer is the greatest untapped power source in the universe” – Lon Solomon • “We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties.” – Oswald Chambers • “When we worry, we aren’t praying. When we pray, we aren’t worrying.” – Max Lucado

  21. “I have so much to do today that I can’t possibly pray less than three hours” – Martin Luther Comments on Value of Planned and Systematic Prayer?

  22. We Are in a Spiritual War For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places… With all prayer and petition … be on the alert with all perseverance (Ephesians 6:12, 18)

  23. Practical Considerations • Target – 5x per week – a habit • Time – alert, consistent • Place – private, quiet • Attitude – humility, dependence

  24. Other Approaches to Prayer • Intercession • Listening • Praying God’s Word back to Him- for example, the Psalms

  25. Other Approaches - Meditation • Not like Eastern religions which seek to empty the mind • We seek to fill our minds with Biblical thoughts – for example, • The names of God • The cross of Christ • The work of the Holy Spirit • Validate everything with the Bible

  26. The One Thing We Haven’t Done Much Of: Let’s Take Some Time and Actually Pray the Lord’s Prayer

  27. Amen.
