ECOG-ACRIN Overview November 2013
Introduction As the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group, we: Are a multidisciplinary, membership-based scientific organization Design and conduct biomarker-driven translational and clinical research involving adults who have or are at risk of developing cancer Seek to achieve patient-centered research breakthroughs in all aspects of cancer care to • Reduce the burden of cancer • Improve quality of life and survival in patients with cancer
History and Strengths The 2012 merger combined the complementary strengths of two highly respected National Cancer Institute-sponsored Cooperative Groups: Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) large-scale treatment trials changed the standard of care in numerous cancer types and helped to individualize therapy American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) trials encompassed the full range of medical imaging research, from pilot studies identifying imaging markers to landmark screening trials
Unique Capacity Because of our biomarker-driven approach and multidisciplinary membership, we are able to: Integrate therapeutic and diagnostic imaging research with the latest bioinformatic technologies Provide laboratory researchers focused on genetics, targeted therapy, and biomarkers with access to the best and newest technologies in functional imaging Explore integral biomarkers, including markers of prognosis and response
Our Research Spans All Aspects of Cancer Care Through Three Scientific Programs
Therapeutic Capabilities Scientific committees in 11 tumor types Phase III, large phase II trials integrating laboratory and advanced imaging science Biomarker and imaging-based adaptive designs Strong integrated laboratory programs • Solid tumors, myeloma, lymphoma, leukemia, immunology, and cytogenetics Integrated clinical laboratory, molecular, and imaging databases • Imaging Core Laboratory manages 100,000+ case records consisting of >23 terabytes of data
Imaging Capabilities Pilot studies to identify, validate imaging biomarkers Surveillance strategies for high-risk populations Prevention approaches in landmark screening trials Trials evaluating imaging markers to predict and monitor therapy response Studies of imaging-directed therapy for improving patient management and associated outcomes Comparative-effectiveness research and cost-effectiveness analysis
