  3. Historically… • Yr 11 is a ‘choke point’ for Maori students • Lack of successful tertiary role models • University seems financially inaccessible and academically unattainable

  4. Achievement of Maori students at NCEA Level 1 • 2004 - 32% • 2005 - 52% • 2006 - 36%

  5. Maori School Leaver Destinations 2006 • 17 % into employment • 39% youth training • 6% degrees • 29% certificates / diplomas • 37% unemployed • Students graduating with an undergraduate diploma have the potential to earn 30% more than those who do not hold a tertiary qualification

  6. Aims of the programme • To increase the retention of Maori Yr 11 students to Yr 13 • To improve academic achievement, particularly in numeracy and literacy • To enhance and foster leadership potential within Maori students • To increase students inspiration and aspirations to continue their education at a tertiary level

  7. Three main components : • Small group mentoring Mentors will work with a group of 4 or 5 students on activities that enhance self confidence, build learning skills including team work and goal seting. These sessions will be held on a Tuesday from 3.15 – 5pm in the school library / whare. Afternoon tea provided.

  8. Academic Study Clinics Topic specific sessions focusing on NCEA subjects, particularly numeracy and literacy

  9. Academic Retreat • An academic retreat where students experience an intensive weekend of learning and have the opportunity to hear from inspirational guest speakers

  10. Tertiary Experience • On site information visits to tertiary institutions At set times students will be able to come on to The University of Auckland campus for tours as well as to seek out information about specific courses of interest.

  11. Intended Outcomes • Leadership roles within the school • Higher academic achievement • Retention to Yr 13
