Cell Cycle Think Quest Mitosis S7L2 http://library.thinkquest.org/C004535/site_navigation.html
Objectives: • The learner will be able to • Identify each stage of the cell cycle • Correctly identify and place in order each stage • Create model or other representation of cell cycle. • Compare plant and animal cell cycles
Cell Cycle Grows, sleeps, grows, then mitosis
Mitosis • Like many things, cells wear out and die. If an organism is to live and grow it must reproduce. Therefore cell division serves an important role in an organism's health and growth. Cell division occurs rapidly in living organisms. For example, in an adult human, millions of cells divide each second to maintain homeostasis (the proper balance in cells). • Cell division begins with interphase, when the cell replicates all of its genetic material and prepares for division. Then the cell enters the 4-phased mitosis. • In mitosis, the cell goes through prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. • Immediately after the completion of telophase, cytokenesis is initiated to end cell division by literally separating the cell in two.
90% of time of its life hanging out, then Nucleus looks like a doughnut hole….but, Each chromosome is copied and now is has two chromotids Interphase-the hanging out part of life before mitosis it replicates DNA
Spindle fiberslook like messy and tangled yarn, then (Get straightened out)Chromatids connected at the center by a centromere, forming a bunch of X-s. Centrosomes move toward opposite poles of the cell, organizing the spindle fibers . Step 1:Prophase x x x x
Nuclear Membrane melts, spills chromotids out into the cytoplasm Chromotids are lined up along the equator of the cell. Two poles (sides) are called daughter cell is also formed by the spindle fibers. Step 2:Metaphase the middle
Notice the spindle fibers begin to pull the two sets of chromosome toward the opposite poles (sides). Chromotids grow to become chromosomes (think tadpoles and frogs) Step 3:Anaphase Chromosomes Poles
Notice the two poles begin form two nuclei (baby nucleus-es) The cells begin to build a new cell membrane in the middle. Forms a scab! Step 4: Telophase
Now there are two separate nuclei, but they are in the same cell. The cell now needs to be split in half now Goes pop! 5: Cytokinesis
Anaphase Prophase Interphase Telophase/ Cytokinesis Metaphase ANSWERS
Create a idiom • Example: I passed my Algebra test with a C. • Your turn…
Tasks: • Diagram the cell cycle • Create model of each stage of mitosis • Create “cell cycle” flash cards • Create poem or “steps” for each stage • Create 10 questions with answers that describe the cell cycle. • Sing “The SONG”

Mitosis to London Bridges Falling Down • In mitosis cells divide, cells divide, cells divide, • In mitosis cells divide, For cell reproduction. • In interphase chromosomes duplicate, duplicate, duplicate, • In interphase chromosomes duplicate, For mitosis. • In prophase we now see chromosomes, see chromosomes, • see chromosomes,In prophase we now see chromosomes, • In mitosis. • In metaphase chromosomes all pair up, all pair up, • all pair up,In metaphase chromosomes all pair up, • In mitosis. • In anaphase chromosomes move apart, move apart, • move apart,In anaphase chromosomes move apart, • In mitosis. • In telophase there are two new cells, two new cells, • two new cells,In telophase there are two new cells, • In mitosis.
