Family Involvement Curriculum Beyond Project SEARCH: Where Do We Go From Here?
Independent Living • Local communities have different options that might include: • Apartment complexes with various levels of support • Group Homes • Remodeled family owned homes • Other creative community options
Retention / Follow-along Services • Retention is critical to keeping the job! • To ensure services, include the local Developmental Disabilities organization in the program design • Interns need to complete eligibility process for DD services • Remember there is an appeal process if denied eligibility
Retention / Follow Along • If your intern is not eligible for DD services, there may be other options. • Ticket-to-Work can provide funds for retention • PASS plans can be written to set aside funds for coaching • Mental Health agencies can provide some support if there are related issues • Vocational Rehabilitation may be able to re-open the case for additional training to save the job or to learn new tasks
Career Development • What if your young adult wants a new job? • Work with the original VR Counselor – they might re-open the case and fund job development. • VR will probably fund additional coaching if the student gets new duties or a new job within the same organization. • The student can advocate for themselves through HR at his/her place of employment.
Relationships • Peer relationships at work • Encourage natural work friendships • Talk about what is appropriate • Friendships outside of work • Disability-related community resources and organizations • Typical community resources
Guardianships, Trusts and Wills • There are laws around these processes. • Get legal advice appropriate to your situation.
Other Issues • Utilize your networks and local resources to address challenges • Contact Project SEARCH staff for connections and assistance. • Celebrate employment and other successes with your young adult!
