Warm-up • FULL SENTENCES FOR FULL CREDIT • How would you feel if you couldn’t say whatever you want when you want it? • How would it feel to have one person dictate or decide everything that you are/are not allowed to do?
TYRANNY A government by a ruler with total power over a country; thought of now as cruel and oppressive government or rule. Tyranny comes from in Greek “tyrannus” meaning “illegitimate ruler”
DICTATORSHIP A government by a ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained power by the people or through force. Dictator comes from “one who dictates” or “gives orders”
Modern Dictatorships Germany – Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) Russia – Joseph Stalin (1878-1953) Cuba – Fulgencio Batista (1901-1973) North Korea – Kim Jong Il (1941-2011) Libya – Muammar al-Gaddafi (1942-2011)
Greek Tyranny • Greek Tyrants: were often wealthy landowners who were brought to power by the lower classes who had become tired of being held down by the oligarchs ruling the city-state. The tyrant was put in sole charge on the pretense that he would rule the city-state well. When they didn’t fulfill the task, they were replaced. • Examples: • Athens – Pisistratus, Hipparchus & Theramenes • Argos – Pheidon • Corinth – Cypselus, Periander & Psammetichus • Samos – Polycrates
