FinSMUG Jukka Pennanen The National Library of Finland
MetaLib/SFX in Finland • 3 library sectors using MetaLib/SFX: university, polytechnic and public libraries • 64 portals • 20 university libraries (19 live 2006) • 29 polytechnic libraries (18 live 2006 ) • 15 public libraries (5 live 2006) • (No special libraries 2006) • All libraries share 1 MetaLib/SFX server • Portal sofware administrated by Nelli office • Hardware and OS maintainded Center for Scientific Computing (CSC)
FinSMUG • Annual seminars since 2005: • FinSMUG OULU 2005 • FinSMUG KUOPIO 2006 • Next FinSMUG in Tampere (2007) • Local speakers from libraries, systemvendors and the National Library
FinSMUG • We have also had Verde and Primo presentations and an exposing presentation “Google Scholar versus Metasearch systems”. All these by Tamar Sadeh. Last spring we had a case study in Amsterdam University Library by Marco Streefkerk.
How does FinSMUG work • Working group consists of members in university, polytechnics, public libraries and the National Library and it changes yearly (~5 members) • FinSMUGs in context with “Triangle seminar” i.e. library systems (LINNEA/Voyager), digital objects management system (DORIA/Encompass) and library portals (NELLI/MetaLib/SFX) • Focus on subjects that libraries find useful and topical
What has been discussed • Usability issues; few surveys have been made in Finland • Statistics in MetaLib and SFX (in both seminars) • MetaIndex, usability and utilization • SFX e-journal categories and how they correspond to domestic needs and local categorization • Proxy • Shibboleth authentication
Practical solutions • Using ILL form in SFX • Customizing MetaLib interface • RefWorks and MetaLib • Briefing in configurations • Shibboleth authorization and EXProxy as IP-proxy (remote usage for web-based licensed databases) • Case: MetaLib/SFX briefing to students in Kuopio and Helsinki University Libraries • Several MetaLib/SFX implementation cases in different libraries in Finland
Meetings with project managers • About four a year • Representatives of each library sector meet at Helsinki university (some joined via video conference) • Reporting on progress of portals • Updating techical information • Sharing experiences
Ad hoc groups • Translation • Categories • Virtual collections • End-user training material
