Communication Systems - a • Communication describes the general information exchange • Systems. • People. • Media. • etc.
Communication Systems - b • Primitive communications systems: • Smoke signals. • Drums. • Semaphore.
Communication Systems - c • Modern communications systems : • Telephone. • Internet. • Television. • Radio. • Fax.
Communication sorts of things • What sorts of things are communicated? • Speech. • Pictures. • Video. • Data.
Communication components Communication components consisted the following: • Transmitter • Receiver • Medium • Message • Protocol • sender of information • destination of information • area to bring information from sender to receiver • The message is the information (data) to be communicated. • A protocol is a set of rules that govern data communications.
What is a Communication System? • Communication systems are systems designed to transmit information.
Types of Communication • Point-to-point Communication • Multipoint Communication • Simplex Communication • Half Duplex Communication • Full – duplex Communication
Point-to-point Communication • In this type, communication takes place between two end points. • For instance, in the case of voice communication using telephones, there is one calling party and one called party.
Multipoint Communication • In this type of communication, there is one sender and multiple recipients. • For example, in voice conferencing, one person will be talking but many others can listen. • The message from the sender has to be multicastto many others.
Simplex Communication • In simplex communication, communication is possible only in one direction. • Example: • TV • Radio
Half Duplex Communication • Half-duplex communication is possible in both directions between two entities (computers or persons), but one at a time. • 2 way signal transmission but not simultaneously. Example: walkie talkie
Full – duplex Communication • In a full-duplex communication system, the two parties—the caller and the called one—can communicate simultaneously. • Telephone is one of the examples of this type.
Network • A computernetwork is an interconnection of a group of computers to exchange data and share the resources.
Network • Computer Networks can be classified according to: • Scale • Functional relationship • Network Topology • Protocol • Network medium • Network Scope
Network classification by Scale • Personal Area Network (PAN) • Local Area Network (LAN). • Campus Area Network (CAN). • Metropolitan Area Network (MAN). • Wide Area Network (WAN).
Network classification by Functional Relationship • Client-server. • Peer-to-peer (workgroup).
Network classification by NetworkTopology • Bus network. • Star network. • Ring network. • Mesh network.
Network classification by Protocol • Computer networks may be classified according to the communications protocol that is being used on the network.
Network classification by Network Medium • Electronic Networks • Optical Networks. • Wireless Networks.
Network Access Scope • Intranet • Extranet • Internet
Summery • We understand what is Communication System. • We understand the types of communication. • We understand what is Computer Network. • We understand the Network classification.
