  3. History 1524: Giovanni da Verrazano discovered New York Bay 1609: Henry Hudson sailed up on the coast (after him - Hudson River) 1626: the Dutch bought Manhattan from native Indians -> „New Amsterdam“ 1664: the English captured the colony -> „New York“

  4. Capital city of the US (for a short time) • Since 1920 – skyscrapers (lack of space) • 20th century – industry and business • 11/09/2001 – Manhattan attacked by terrorists (over 3000 people died)
