TEMPERS • Technique • Example • Meaning • Purpose • Effect on reader • Relates to the rest of the text • Success Robert Frost uses allusion, writing ‘so Eden sank to grief’. This refers to the garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve lived. It started as the perfect place, then became corrupted.Through this allusion, Frost states that all perfect things don’t last. The garden of Eden has connotations of unspoilt nature. Therefore, the reader automatically thinks of paradise. This links to the final line of the poem ‘so nothing gold can stay’ for both the allusion and the final line refer to the fact that we cannot hang on to things that are flawless. The allusion is effective, for it taps into knowledge that we already have.
