  2. Notebooks • Write these notes on page R34 in your notebooks.

  3. Objective • Determine an authors point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.

  4. Additional Notes • Additional Notes can be found on page 101 in Lit books.

  5. Voice • The way a writer sounds on a page. • Can show their point of view • Also shows the writers personality or style

  6. Identifying Voice • We identify a voice in three ways: • Word Choice • Tone/attitude • Syntax/sentence structure

  7. Word choice • The words the writer chooses to use. Look at the sentences below and identify the difference. • I do not think that man is very likeable. • I hate that guy.

  8. Word Choice • Would you rather be called cheap or thrifty?

  9. Definition/Denotation • Thrifty-using money and other resources carefully • cheap-low in price

  10. Connotation • Cheap- unwilling to spend money • Thrifty- good at saving money

  11. Denotation/ Connotation • Denotation/ connotation • Denotation= dictionary • Connotation= connection/feelings connected to word • Thief/ robber • Skinny/slender • Clever/brainy

  12. Tone • The way the writer feels about the subject • Tone can connect to authors purpose • If the writer seems upset, they may be writing in order to persuade someone to change something that they think is wrong. • If the writer seems objective/factual they maybe writing to inform

  13. sentences • Short= fast paced, create action, good for describing dramatic events • Long sentences= more exploring an idea than giving an idea, can create tension • The arrangement of words can also affect the voice of the writer.

Authors Purpose • His or hers main reason for writing • 3 main reasons • Inform- Facts • Persuade- opinions • Narrate/tell a story/entertain- plot components, dialogue, characters (Usually fictional) • The purpose can be very specific • Ex. The writer might be writing to expose a social problem or describe an adventure.

A White House Diary by Lady Bird Johnson • Page 105 in Lit books • Informational text • Notice information or ideas conveyed in the title. • Look for organizational features such as subheads. • Identify the subject of photos, illustrations, or diagrams • Story is a autobiography about the assassination of John F. Kennedy • The writer is the wife of the vice president at the time, Lyndon Johnson.

  16. Reading Lens • Focus on the following while we read: • The kinds of words the writer is using. • How does the writer feel? • Are the sentences long or short? • What is the writers purpose for writing this story? • What might be a more specific purpose?

  17. Final Question • Write the answer on page L32 in your notebooks. • 1. How does the writer feel. What is her voice? • 2.How might the voice of the presidents wife be a different kind of journal? • 3. What general purpose do you think Mrs. Johnson had in writing this portion of “A White House Diary? Give evidence from the text. What more specific purpose do you think she had? Give evidence from the text. (inform, persuade, entertain)

  18. Objective • Analyze how complex characters develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.

  19. Character • Person or animal that takes part in the action of a literary work.

  20. Round or Flat • Round Character- complex, showing many different qualities -----revealing faults as well as virtues • Flat Character- one dimensional, showing a single trait

  21. Dynamic or static • Dynamic character- develops, changes, and learns something during the course of a story. • Static character- remains the same throughout the story.

  23. Activity • Identify the following character as round or flat. Then identify if they are dynamic or static. Be sure to have evidence as we will share.

  31. Walter Mitty • Analyze the character • What was the authors purpose for writing this story. • Come up with a theme and expand on how the author uses that theme as his purpose for writing

  32. PIE • Separate you paper into 3 columns. Write P at the top of one column, I at the top of another, and E at the top of the last column. • Write about your favorite type of pie. Under P, write to persuade. Under I, write to inform, and under E, write to entertain. • Each writing must be at least 4 sentences (1 paragraph).
