  1. INTEGRATION Summed-up experience of Autumn exchange

  2. Barriers to integration (beginning) • Language • Culture of BOTH domestic / incoming population • False expectations • Negative first contact (with authorities/population) • Uninteligible system

  3. Factors facilitating integration • Native friends • Activities outside of centers • Voluntary work. . . occasional jobs • Culture + sports activities • SOME of those genuinely spontaneous, some need to be helped with

  4. KEY: Language • Key to ANY further activity • Some countries provide courses, some don´t • None - less intensive – intensive - long-term, generally free • Sometimes compulsory (or conditional) • Run by state/local/volunteers or mixture of all those

  5. Training (incl. Vocational) • Getting experience (not just skills, but communication), becoming part of community • Apprenticeship – in supermarkets(NOR) • Mandatory courses on the country´s facts(NOR) • Informatique (ICT) / restaurants training(BEL, IRL, NOR) • Practical courses: repairing electr.devices (ITA)

  6. Labour market…. • Lack of labour = vicious circle of passivity • Work = responsibility = money = freedom • Barriers? Papers, permits (status), qualification, racism

  7. Examples (not) to be followed • Swiss trip to water mill • Danish trip to Mc Donalds´ • St.Nicholas: feasting together (villagers + seekers) • Breakfasting together • Football against the local police

  8. Integration for whom?

  9. Accommodation • End of dependancy on institutions (organised help) • Its size or type does not matter that much: pros and cons

  10. Integration = ? • Several levels: Language = numeroUNO • house / job • networked with locals • two-way process

  11. Optimal solution (Future perspectives) • Courses of language: free, seekers+holders, intensive, compulsory • Civic orientation training • Access to labour market from the start (incl. paying taxes + accommodation)
