Review Properties → Characteristics which allow us to identify and distinguish one material from another and predict the behavior of a material. Physical Properties → Characteristics possessed by materials which can be used to help identify the material and how it might act.
Metal Physical Properties of Metals → Strength→ The ability to resist the effect of force. Toughness→ The ability to absorb energy before it fractures.
Metal Physical Properties of Metals → Malleable→ Capable of being hammered or rolled into a sheet. Ductility→ Capable of being drawn into a wire.
Metal Physical Properties of Metals → Opaque → Will not transmit light. Luster→ The glow of reflected light from a material.
Metal Physical Properties of Metals → Ferromagnetic → The ability to strongly attract a magnet. What are the 3 elements that are Ferromagnetic? Cobalt, Iron & Nickel
Metal Physical Properties of Metals→ • Good Conductors of Electricity • Good Conductors of Heat • High Melting Point • Quite Dense
Metal Metals→ • Tend to form Ionic Compounds by losing Valence Electrons What is a mixture of a metal & at least one other element? Alloy
Metal What would you Classify: Iron→ Is an Element Is an Alloy Steel→ Iron and Carbon
Metal Properties of Metals → Corrosion→ Metals usually combine with Oxygen to form a metal oxide. Example: Copper + Oxygen→ Copper oxide Aluminum + Oxygen → Aluminum oxide Iron + Oxygen → Iron oxide Rust
Metal How do we prevent Iron or Steel from Corroding or Rusting? Galvanize→ To Place a zinc coating on an iron alloy for the purpose of corrosion protection.
Metal Grain → A tiny crystal that is part of a larger conglomeration of crystals. A force that causes a material to undergo a distortion. Stress →
Metal Annealing → Heat treating that usually softens or relieves stresses in the material. The shaping and forming of either hot or cold metal by beating or hammering it. Forging→
Metal To strengthen a material by reshaping it while the part is cold. Work Hardening→ Die → A form either through which material is forced in order to produce an item with the same kind of shape.
