Revelle Soundings • 630 Soundings • Launched from main deck fan tail or either side depending on wind direction • During IOPs ship stationary and sometimes becalmed • Deck heating • Balloon sometimes followed exhaust plume
Downtown Diego GarciaBritish Indian Ocean Territory Airport . Tent City ISS • ISS at USAF site at Tent City • Isolated location with very limited access
ISS Site Met Tower Lab Container Wind Profiler GPS WV & WXT Helium Container All Sky Cam Solar Sensors Rain Gauge, Isotope samples Disdro’WXT RASS Ceilometer Tipping Bucket • Wind Profiler with RASS • Ceilometer • Met Tower with solar radiation and tipping bucket gauge • Water Vapor GPS • 2 WXT (510 with disdrometer & 520) • All sky camera • Manual rain gauge and water isotope sampling • Launched around 700 soundings
Icing • In heavy rain at up around the freezing level the balloons often iced up • Affected around 2% of soundings • Added extra Helium and applied Pam
Summary and Known Issues • Launched around 1300 radiosondes • Ship, Island & Lagoon Heating • Fetch on ship and island • Ship exhaust plume • Radiosonde pressure offset • Radiosonde solar heating • Balloon Icing • Rain gauge faults • Moisture in solar radiation sensors • Metocobservations • Ship profiler sea clutter • GPS Water Vapor from ship analysis
