You should have done the following so far - • Completed labs 1 & 2 and have them signed off by your instructor. • Downloaded the vSphere 5.x exam blue print. • Downloaded both the 5.1 and 5.5 configuration maximums. Start going through them and learn 5-6 of them a day. • Digested all the detail of Chapter 1 in the Sybex book. • You should have purchased your e-book. If not then do this right away. • You should have download a free copy of VMware workstation for Windows, Mac, or Linux and have this up and running on your home machine. • You should be creating a home lab as you create your classroom virtual lab. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
This week our objectives will be • Complete labs 3, 4, & 5 • Do the labs in 3, 5, 4 order. You may not get lab 4 completed tonight – but give it a try. • Lab three is setting up our domain controller. It will be our authentication server as well as our DNS server. • Lab 5 will be setting up our ESXi hosts. We will do this several times throughout the semester as our evaluation copy will expire in 60 days. The next time we install it will be much easier as we only have to delete vSphere 5.5 and reinstall it. The same with the ESXi hosts. Note: 120 of days of free will get us through the semester. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
Next Week’s Objectives (Week#3) • We will hopefully complete the setup of our virtual lab and in week#4 we can start using it. We will need to install our iSCSI SAN software and file services for UNIX on the 08R2 server as we want to have a NFS data store for our ISOs. This will need to be completed before we start to configure vCenter. • We also will need to configure our vCenter Server. We will need to create a datacenter and add our two hosts. We will need to install and configure 4 vSwitches. Install our software iSCSI adapter and create our VMFS data stores and our NFS data store. • Note: it will still be a few weeks until we are actually installing and configuring virtual machines inside of vSphere. (Chapter 6 in the Sybex book.) • We will start covering our e-book Feb 4 - so please have this by next week at the latest. • Our first quiz will happen next week. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
Next Week’s Objectives • The quiz will be fifty questions covering chapter 1 & 2 from the Sybexbook, our two lectures, and our 5 labs. That means if you do not finish them all tonight – you need to spend some extra lab time before next week. • I expect you to know our virtual labs infrastructure setup. i.e, the four machines names, IP addresses, mission statement, etc. • Configuration Maximums are always good fodder for the exam. Learn a few each day and this will be easy. • Next week we will get our POD assignment for the Cisco/NDG labs. You will be expected to know the infrastructure & mission of each VM of that virtual lab too. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
VMware gave me some PowerPoint slides for the e-book After our lab discussion for the week – I will post some PowerPoint slides that VMware gave me on the e-book for the Install, configure and manage course – 5.1. Last week, Jan 22, I received an e-mail from VMware and you now have a choice on two exam modules. VCP-DCV on 5.0&5.1 or an exam that is exclusively on 5.5. Either exam will earn you your VCP-DCA 5.x Note: we will be using both 5.5 and 5.1 so you should be comfortable with both by the end of this course. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
Prepare for the exam • I mentioned this last week – you need to do 1000’s of practice test questions. Every screen in vSphere is fodder for the exam. • To give an example, I had one question on the exam and I had to know 5 of the configuration maximums before I could begin to figure out the answer to the question. • A good litmus test to see if you are half-way there is to take the VCA-DCV exam. You can do this at home, on the web, anytime you feel you are ready. (Not too hard, but I can also say it is not real easy.) You can take it for free by getting an exam voucher on the VMAP site. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
Our Virtual Lab Setup (continued) • “dc.vita.local” needs 1 vCPU, 2GB of RAM, one NIC, and one 160GB – thin disk. • This will be our domain controller. Our domain name suffix will be vita.local • Set your NICs IPv4 address to 192.168.246.19/24 with the default gateway of 192.168.246.2. Your DNS address and WINS address will both be 192.168.246.19. • Make sure NBT is turned on. • We may cut down the RAM to 1GB if we find out we have memory problems as we only have 16GB on the Dell/Lenovo. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
Our Virtual Lab Setup (continued) • Here is our RAM usage on our virtual lab. • Workstation 10 host 64bit Win 7 (Dell/Lenovo) needs a minimum of 2GB. • ESXi1 5.5 hypervisor needs a minimum of 4GB. • ESXi2 5.5 hypervisor needs a minimum of 4GB. • “vc.vita.local” needs a minimum of 4GB • “dc.vita.local” is set to use 2GB of RAM • Total RAM usage = 16GB and that’s what we have. If we see we are paging too much we may cut down the dc to 1GB of RAM and that should work. Worst case scenario - we go back to 5.1 where our ESXi hosts only need 2GB or RAM. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
More on dc.vita.local • Make a folder on the root of your c: drive called scripts. • Place this one line batch file in scripts folder. This will give us a pleasant way to shutdown our servers without have to answer an annoying question when we shutdown. Call it sd.bat. • Shutdown /s /t 1 • When you setup your NICs make sure you put a shortcut on your desktop to get there in one click. It normally takes several clicks to get to your NICs and we will be going there constantly all semester long. We need a one click method. • Once again let me reiterate – I assume you know Windows, how to run, configure, and maintain the OS. If there ever is something in the lab you do not know how to do just raise your hand and I will come over and show you how to do the procedure. (Remember – nothing is a secret in this course – it is always OK to ask.) I will not give you much of an explanation on how to do stuff in Windows as I am assuming you know it already. Just remember its OK if you don’t -- just ask. The labs would be way too long if I had to explain every Windows procedure. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
More on dc.vita.local • Rename your NIC to 192.168.246.19 and setup your IPv4 properties to IP = 192.168.246.19/24, mask = 255.255.255.0, default gateway to 192.168.246.2, DNS to 192.168.246.19 and WINS to 192.168.246.19. • Open up server manager and add the WINs feature to your machine dc.vita.local. Remember to turn on NBT. • VMware gives your machine a stupid name, rename your machine to dc with a Computer description of – “Domain controller for vita.local.” It will make your reboot at this point. • Log back in and in your search box type dcpromo and hit enter to elevate your machine to a domain controller – make sure you set your domain functional level to – 2008R2. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
More on dc.vita.local • After you run dcpromo, your machine will reboot again. Log back in as the administrator. • Place the following icons on your desktop – all 5 desktop icons, NICs, adobe reader, services, an administrator command prompt, ADUC (active directory user and computers – rename this to aduc), WINS, DNS, and a shortcut to your sd.bat file you created in the scripts folder. • Make sure your folder options, view settings are set to the tech’s view. (See class notes) • Your desktop should look like the next screen shot. When it is then call me over to sign off your lab#3. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
dc.vita.local’s desktop • Remember to set your desktop color to black. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
ESXi Setup • This is Lab#5, we are going to create two virtual machines with names esxi1 & esxi2. • Make sure you give them 4GB of RAM • Give both machines 2 CPUs. • Give both machines 40GB hard drives with the options – single file and allocate all disk space now. • Set your CD/DVD to point to the following iso file in the vSphere5.5 folder on the Dell/Lenovo: • …\vsphere5.5\VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.5.0-1331820.x86_64.iso Week#2 vSphere 5.1
More on the ESXi Setup • After the ESXi VM installs, shut it down, and add 5 more NICs. Your NIC configurations should look like the slide below. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
More on the ESXi Setup • Power on your VM • Set your network configuration to • esxi1 IP management address should be set to 192.168.246.21/24 with a default gateway of 192.168.246.2. The DNS server should be set to 192.168.246.19 • esxi2 IP management address should be set to 192.168.246.22/24 with a default gateway of 192.168.246.2. The DNS server should be set to 192.168.246.19 • This is Linux and the only edit keys that work are backspace and the arrow keys. • After both esxi hosts are setup we are ready to do lab 4. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
Setting up vc.vita.local • After dc.vita is setup, and our esxi servers are setup, we will start our setup of vc.vita.local. This will be good 2-3 hours of work, as this machine will wear a variety of hats. • Note: if you have USB device plugged in, your VM can support them. You will get a dialog box like the following: If you click OK they should install into your VM - if you click the x in the upper right corner they will not. Just remember the rule, a USB device can only go to one VM or to the host. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
More on vc.vita.local • Make sure your vc.vita.local machine has a blue desktop. I want you to know were you are in your virtual lab just by the desktop color. • This machine needs to have some virtual hardware added to it. If this machine is powered on turn it off. Edit your hardware settings and do the following: • Give vc 4GB or RAM • Give vc 2 CPUs (OK for 2-1 core processors or 1-2 core processor) • Give vc 2 extra pre-allocated 35GB hard drives with names scsi1.vmdk & scsi2.vmdk. Make sure they are stored as with the single file option. • Give vc two NICs one from VMnet8 (NAT) and one from VMnet3. • Run server manager and add the file services for NFS feature in the file server role. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
More on vc.vita.local • Go to your adapter settings and do a status check on each of your NICs. You need to identify each NIC and find out which network they are on and label them accordingly. Label the management NIC 192.168.246.20 and set its IPv4 properties to: IP address 192.168.246.20/24, DNS 192.168.246.19, WINS 192.168.246.19, select the NBT option, Default gateway 192.168.246.2 • The second NIC label 192.168.3.20 and set its IPv4 properties to 192.168.3.20/24. • Give your VM the machine name of vc and set the computer description to be vCenter Server. When you change the name, it will ask you to reboot – do. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
More on vc.vita.local • Log back in as administrator. • Download and install Slysoft’sVirtual Clone Drive. (Note: it may be in our utils folder) • Join the vita.local domain, reboot, log into the domain with the administrator account. • Put back your five desktop icons. (Remember this is a new profile.) • Make sure your desktop is blue in color. • Set your folder, view options to the tech’s view – see class notes. • Create a scripts folder and create a sd.bat file just like we did in dc.vita.local Week#2 vSphere 5.1
More on vc.vita.local • Click start, administrative tools and add a shortcut for services. Also, make a shortcut for an administrative command prompt, and one for your sd.bat file. • At this point mount the ISO for the vSphere installation DVD, VMware-VIMSetup-all-5.5.0-1312299.iso. Do this inside your running VM and the install program should start running. • Run them in the following order – do not use the simple install as it often errors out when using nested virtualization: Week#2 vSphere 5.1
More on vc.vita.local • When you install the sso – Single Sign On service use Password$1 for your password. • Your login name for the sso service will be administrator@vsphere.local • Finish off by installing the VMware vSphere Client (a.k.a. the C# client) • Place a shortcut for the vSphere Web client, services, Shutdown, Virtual clone drive, and administrative command prompt, the 5 desktop icons, NICs on your desktop. • When all this is working have your instructor sign off lab 4. • Your desktop should look like the next slide. Week#2 vSphere 5.1
