  1. Lab: How do Wii Just Dance levels easy, medium, and hard affect resting blood pressure and heart rate compared to regular exercise on an elliptical? By: Tori Benson, Callie Holloway, Megan Telfer, Chaitra Setty, Leslie Yeh

  2. So What? Most beneficial way to exercise Fun way to exercise Wii claims that workout mode can be used as a substantial form of exercise

  3. Variables Independent Variables Intensity of exercise Resting Mild  Tough Intense Elliptical (no level of intesity) Dependent Variables Change in heart rate Change in blood pressure

  4. Materials - Wii and a Wii remote - TV - Just Dance Wii game - Heart Rate Monitor with Heart Rate watch - Electronic Blood Pressure Monitor - Timer - Elliptical - Water

  5. Method 1. Take resting blood pressure and heart rate for each of the three test subjects to determine baseline 2. Have each test subject complete Just Dance mild level song "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5. Take blood pressure and heart rate right after 3 mins of dancing. 3. Allow for blood pressure and heart rate to return to baseline (for 8 minutes). 4. Repeat steps two and three for the tough song, "Baby Girl" by Reggaeton and the intense song, "Rasputin" by Boney M and for elliptical.

  6. Ra - Ra - Rasputin!

  7. Results Table 1:Percent Difference from Baseline for Mild, tough, Intense, and Regular Exercise for Heart Rate (bmp) and Mean Arterial Pressure (mmHg) **Regular = elliptical: no intensity

  8. **Regular = elliptical: no intensity

  9. Conclusion • Summary of Findings • We found that the intense level on the Wii Just Dance had a percent heart rate difference of 133.8% compared to the resting rate, and a mean arterial pressure difference of 25.9% compared to the resting mean arterial pressure -which was the highest when compared to all other levels of intensity on the Wii Just Dance and Elliptical (no level of intensity) • While the percent difference of heart rate for the mild level was 78.3%; for the tough level it was 69.7% and 102.6% for the Elliptical (regular exercise)- no level of intensity • The percent difference of mean arterial pressure was 16.4% for the mild level; and 9.5% for the tough level and 12.6% for the Elliptical (regular exercise)- no level of intensity • After conducting this experiment it is evident that it is more beneficial to play the highest level of the Just Dance rather than working out on the Elliptical at the no level of intensity

  10. Conclusion • Biological Explanation • Due to the excessive movements the body's skeletal muscles need more oxygen to be able to complete the ETC to provide the energy needed. This need for oxygen to be circulated elevates the heart rate so that the blood circulated faster replenishing oxygen. When you exercise your blood vessels also constrict so blood velocity will increase creating higher blood pressure. The elliptical did result in the highest percent difference because there was no resistance due to the elliptical or yourself, while in the intense program your body was the resistance.

  11. Conclusion •  Errors • technology malfunctioned twice when trying to take blood pressure-allowing for time to pass and affect the blood pressure  • the elliptical was broken so there was no resistance, making it a little easier than running outside on the pavement

  12. Conclusion • Fixes • go for a jog outside on the pavement where there is natural resistance and the normal form of exercise • the blood pressure and heart rate would have been higher • test out the blood pressure machine right before needing to test it on the "trial" and then the user of the blood pressure machine would know that it was working and the blood pressure would be accurately taken after the workout

  13. Conclusion •  Ideas for further research • test other wii games, test wii fit, kinect • compare to other forms of exercise such as jogging • test other dependent variables such as respiratory rate • see if the pattern applies over more time

  14. So, next time you are wondering whether you should hit the gym or stay at home and Just Dance... OR ?

  15. Results-RAW DATA Data Table #1: Blood Pressure(mmHg) and Heart Rate(bpm) at Base Line and After Exercise (for easy, medium, and hard levels of Wii and the elliptical) **elliptical: no intensity

  16. Average Heart Rate and Mean Arterial Pressure for Each Level of Intensity Data Table #2: Average Heart Rate (bpm) For Resting, Mild, Tough, Intense, and Regular Exercise Data Table #3: Average Mean Arterial Pressure (mmHg) for Resting, Mild, Tough, and Intense and Regular Exercise **Regular = elliptical: no intensity
