13 January 2005 Taking Stock & Gaining Momentum Yesterday was a bustling day with the visit of Minister for Education, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam to the Muslim camp located on the grounds of a mosque in Veloor, Trincomalee. The Minister gave his commitment to the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and the local communities he visited that Singapore would assist in the re-building of the education system in areas destroyed by the Tsunami. The Minister started his visit in Colombo and headed north-east to Trincomalee where he visited the two camps that had been served by the combined Red Cross/NHG/Singhealth medical mission. He was full of praise for the work and dedication of the volunteers. Following the visit, the team continued to care for the sick on the mosque grounds and at the end of the day, they had seen 227 patients. Within the first three days of starting the mobile medical clinics the team report the following: Total no. of people seen : 380 Adults : 274 77% Children : 106 28% Male : 176 46% Female : 204 54% Conditions URTI 214 56% Lower RTI 30 8% Gastrointestinal infections 18 5% Infected wounds 33 9% Skin conditions/musculoskeletal complaints/anaemia 22% Diarrhoeal diseases are minimal The population of Veloor consists of 300 families of 1000 people. The Singapore Red Cross Society (SRCS) has also confirmed the plan for the team to visit 4 - 5 camps over the next few weeks with a total camp population of 12,000 people. As Team 2 comprising Dr Chan Kim Chai, TTSH ED; Dr Vivien Lim, AH; and Shymala d/o Sivalingam and Usha Devi NM both of NUH; prepare to depart, Team 1 is starting to get into the swing of things. To facilitate the Mission and Team 2's entry, Dr Suresh Pillai and Sister Pung Ai Khim will continue with the second team. Our photographer, Alphonso Chan, will also be there to capture and document all the significant moments of this important SRCS/NHG/SH Mission.
