STELLAR & Language Learning Teaching & learning of English using more speaking and listening activities. learn reading & writing using rich & interesting books with teacher –led discussions
STELLAR is different because… Classroom Environment is: Language learning is achieved through: focused on children’s interaction rather than on teacher talk enriched with children’s written language filled with various reading materials for children’s use vocabulary learned in books expression of thoughts discussions with other children and the teacher informal peer interaction vocabulary learned in books expression of thoughts discussions with other children and the teacher informal peer interaction
What is a STELLAR lesson like? 1.Shared Reading Experiences Children read storybook with the teacher and engage in oral discussions with teacher and peers 2. Shared Writing Experiences 3. Language Use Activities in Learning Centres The teacher prepares mini lessons based on specific needs of children to prepare them for reading & writing activities; e.g. grammar, vocabulary, word recognition, decoding skills, spelling The teacher models writing using children’s language. Children engage in writing together and in writing independently
Each STELLAR Unit includes… Concepts about print: (i.e. spacing between words, reading from left to right, punctuation) Key teaching points: Vocabulary (i.e. meaning of words, phrases) Word identification activities (i.e. spelling patterns, letter-sound relationships) Grammar (i.e. present/past tense, singular/plural forms)

English Language Programmes:- • Learning Journeys • Kids Read Programme for selected Pri 1 & 2 pupils Target group : FAS pupils - gross monthly household income not exceeding $3500 Frequency : once a week (before curriculum time) Conducted by : Parent Volunteers • S.E.E.D activities for experiential learning • English Language Fiesta (ELF @ Woodgrove)
English Language Programmes:- • Support for pupils who are weak in the language through the following:- i) Learning Support Programme Target group : pupils who are below their reading age group. Frequency : Daily withdrawal during curriculum time, under guidance of Learning Support Coordinator Class size : Between 5 – 10 students Focus : Reading (Phonics and Recognition of sight words, sentence construction, vocabulary building)
English Language Programmes:- • Support for pupils who are weak in the language but not in the Learning Support Programme:- i) PromotingOurReadingTalent (PORT) & Advanced PromotingOurReadingTalent (PORT) Target group : PORT (20 – 30 marks) & Advanced PORT (30 – 40 marks) Duration : 45 minutes before Curriculum Time, Class size : 10 students Focus : 4 Language Skills, mainly on Reading Comprehension
