Mountains • The mountains of the region are part of a long system that runs from Alaska to Cape Horn. • These mountains were formed by plate tectonics. The ocean plate is pushed underneath the continental plate. This subduction create mountains that are volcanic and prone to earthquakes and landslides.
Mountains • Major mountain ranges: • Sierra Madre Occidental • Sierra Madre Oriental • Lesser Antilles • Volcanic (i.e. Martinique and Montserrat) • Andes • Longest mountain range in the world. • 2nd highest mountain range in the world. • Mt. Aconcagua - Highest peak in the region.
Plains • Major areas of plains: • Gulf Coast • Llanos • Amazon Basin • Pampas • “breadbasket” - produces wheat and corn • Gauchos - cowhands that drive herds of cattle.
Rivers • Rio Grande • aka Rio Bravo del Norte • only major river in Central America. • creates border between U.S. and Mexico
Rivers • Amazon • second longest river in world • largest discharge in world (10 times larger than Mississippi)
Rivers • Paraná • important for inland transportation routes and hydroelectric power • Iguaçu Falls is a World Heritage site. • joins with Paraguay and Uruguay Rivers before emptying into the Rio de la Plata. Iguacu Falls
Lakes • Lake Titicaca • Highest navigable lake in the world. • 12,507 feet above sea level.
Angel Falls • Highest waterfall in the world. • 3,212 feet high (2,648 uninterrupted) • Named after aviator Jimmy Angel. Known locally as “Devil’s Mouth”
