  1. Are you interested in Art, Ancient Culture, Ancient Writing and Beautiful Architecture? YES Then call Rosetta Stone Tours We will answer all your questions through our Hieroglyphic tour of Egypt.

  2. Learn: Who created Hieroglyphics? http://digitalgallery.nypl.org Digital Image ID: 410916 Digital Record ID: 224407 Most Egyptians didn’t write. Hieroglyphics were only written by Scribes. Scribes were the few Egyptians who knew how to read and write. They might write letters or draw up contracts, record the harvest, or collect taxes. Scribes were the ones who would calculate the amount of food needed to feed the tomb builders. They also ordered supplies for the temples and the Egyptian army. Many scribes wrote mathematical or medical papers. Some scribes were teachers or librarians who copied books and wrote inscriptions for tombs and temples. It took a long time to study to become a scribe, sometimes 12 years.

  3. Find Out: What was the purpose of hieroglyphics? This picture demonstrates the difference between Hieratic and Hieroglyphics. Ceiling painting in Great Hypostyle hall at Karnak. Paul Fuqua. 2005. unitedstreaming. 24 April 2006 http://www.unitedstreaming.com/ Hieroglyphics were reserved for writing mostly on stone. That is why we mostly find them written on buildings and tombs. More often scribes actually wrote Hieratic which is like Hieroglyphic script written on papyrus like the background in this presentation. Hieratic was used for everyday purposes, like recording taxes. http://www.bergen.org/AAST/Projects/Egypt/hieroglyphics_report.html

  4. Visit: The best examples of Hieroglyphics We will be visiting Temple of Horus at Edfu - The Temple at Edfu is the best preserved. The reason is that the temple had been almost totally submerged under the desert . A small amount of stone had been removed from the exposed part, but when it was discovered by Mariette, in the 1860s it was found to be in near perfect condition. Karnak near Luxor is also a must. It is the largest temple complex ever built by man. Although it is not well preserved like Edfu, it is impressive not only because of its size (247 acres) , but the length of time that went into building it (1300 years.) The three main temples to visit are Mut, Montu and Amun. At Karnak we see very impressive examples of hieroglyphics. Horus conversing with King Ptolemy XII.. 6. What role did Egyptian Hieroglyphics play in helping the Egyptian society to advance? Student Reflections: I think Egyptian society became so developed because of Hieroglyphics, and the use of Hieratic as well. Using these forms of writing helped the Egyptians to document their leaders, the economy, laws, the use of medicine, and mathematics. Without Hieroglyphics the Egyptians would never have been able to share their advances with future generations or other cultures. Safraz Class 6-315 The Egyptians became advanced because of their ability to communicate. They found a number of ways to share their thoughts by writing on papyrus, carving temple walls and inside of tombs. This was a way for them to communicate with each other even in the after life.
