John 16 Carly Lundi; Jun 2, 2019
“All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. 2They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. 3They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me . 4I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away.
“cost of discipleship” - Luke 14:25-33 • Total Allegiance to Christ • Total Surrender to Christ • Total Commitment to Christ • Total Separation to Christ
Discussion question #1 “What are some ways you feel like you are being persecuted for your faith, whether external or internal?” What are some ways are you facing Hostility from this world or even from your own heart, tempting you to fall away?”
“And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged. - John16:8-11
Ministry of the Holy Spirit in the World • Convict the world concerning Sin. • Convict the world concerning Righteousness. • Convict the world concerning Judgment
He Convicts the world of Sin: • He is responsible for conversion: • The Holy Spirit is responsible for softening an unbelievers heart, and leading them to a conversion. • The Holy Spirit is responsible for convicting and exposing sin.
He convicts the world Concerning Righteousness • The Holy Spirit is the power behind the new creation • The Holy Spirit is the power behind faith in Christ as Savior. • The Holy Spirit is the power behind faith in Christ’s righteousness alone. • The Holy Spirit is the source of the fruits of the Spirit that are foundational to Christian living. • The Holy Spirit is the power that giving us freedom from sin.
The Holy Spirit will convict the world concerning judgment. Where sin and righteousness meet, judgment follows: our witness to unbelievers must include sin, righteousness, and judgment, along with faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
Jesus says the Holy Spirit will convict the world concerning sin, righteousness and judgment. (v.8-11) What do people in the world need to be convicted about concerning sin, righteousness and judgement? How can you be empowered to preach the gospel to friends, coworkers, neighbors, etc, by knowing that the Holy Spirit does the work of conviction and drawing people to himself? The disciples going into the world to be witnesses, to represent Christ
for I love you! I leave you,
