  2. Communication Apprehension • What is it? • “The fear or anxiety associated with either real or anticipated communication with another person or persons” (McCroskey, 1977, p. 78).

  3. Myths • You are more nervous than anyone else who gives a speech • Public speaking anxiety is insurmountable • Those with high levels of communication anxiety are not natural speakers

  4. Facts • More than half of all experienced speakers feel nervous or fearful before giving a speech (Hahner, Sokoloff, & Salisch, 1993). • Many people find ways to cope with public speaking anxiety • Fear associated with public speaking is natural and can be overcome!

  9. Levels of Communication Apprehension • Traitlike CA: You tend to feel anxious about communicating with others in most situations. About 20% of people fall in this category(Richmond & McCroskey, 1995).

  10. Levels of Communication Apprehension • Audience Based: You feel particularly anxious about communicating with a particular person or group of people. • Situational CA: A short-lived feeling of anxiety in response to a specific communication encounter (McCroskey, 1984).

  11. Levels of Communication Apprehension • Context-Based CA: Anxiety over communicating in a particular setting (e.g., small groups, interpersonal, meetings, and public speaking) (McCroskey, 1984).
