Beginning of UN • Started in the aftermath of WWII • UN charter was drafted in the Spring of 1945 • Charter was ratified on October 24, 1945- marked official start of UN
United Nations • Background info- • Goal is to “maintain international peace and security” • Promotes international cooperation to build positive economic, social, and political conditions • Headquarters are located in New York City • Broken into five main groups
General Assembly • Each country involved sends a delegation of up to five people • General decision makers about most topics • Also decide budget and elect president • Meet annually
ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) • Central forum for the discussion of all economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian issues • Coordinator between the UN and its specialized agencies • Meets whenever issues arise, all issues resolved by majority vote • Terms last 3 years, 54 representatives
International Court of Justice (ICJ) • Judicial section of the UN- made to bring world’s greatest criminals to justice • Reached agreements about laws about genocide and war criminals • Handles any disputes between countries- decisions can’t be appealed • 15 judges, all from different countries
Secretariat • Basically the overseer of all other sections • Has Secretary-General (currently Ban Ki Moon) who attends meetings of General Assembly and ECOSOC • Doesn’t take orders from any government
Security Council • When a problem arises between countries, they try to end it quickly by peaceful means • Council investigates to see what nation/group is at fault • Has the power to impose sanctions, trade embargos, enforce international law, or use military force • A nation that repeatedly violates UN law may be expelled • Also regulates how much military weaponry is produced
Peace Keeping Forces • Consists of about 14,000 police and 86,000 military personnel • Main objective is to instill stability in war torn countries and help rebuild • Civilian and trained volunteers
Specialized Agencies • Have some agencies that focus on more specific topics, here are a few: • Food and Agriculture Organization • International Labor Organization • World Health Organization • Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization
UN Operations • Korean War • N. Korea invaded S. Korea, UN saw it as a breach of peace • Came to aid of South Korea • Syria • Working to stop armed violence in Syria due to a civil war
