PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON A BUDGETPRESENTED BY MARI ANN CALLAIS, PH.D. AND CAMPUSPEAK
TOUGH TIMES FOR HIGHER ED BE CREATIVE AFAAND OTHER PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS HAVE SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND CONFERENCES OTHER CONFERENCES MAY OFFER THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES CHOOSE REGIONAL EVENTS THAT YOU CAN DRIVE IN FOR INSTEAD OF FLYING PUT SOME OF YOUR PERSONAL MONIES AWAY FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT – ALTHOUGH IT MIGHT NOT SEEM FAIR – THIS IS ULTIMATELY YOUR CAREER SEARCH YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY FOR WORKSHOPS AND PRESENTATIONS THAT MIGHT NOT BE HIGHER EDUCATION BUT MIGHT PERTAIN TO SKILLS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO WHAT YOU DO – SOCIAL MEDIA, FINANCIAL WORKSHOPS, COMMUNICATION SKILLS, COPING IN A STRUGGLING ECONOMY WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOURSELF AND YOUR DEVELOPMENT?
DR. PHIL SAYS… Update your resume – don’t just put title of job and dates; Describe successes, increase number of students participating in programs, recruitment numbers, etc. Be active on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. Take opportunities to write articles in professional newsletters, magazines, other publications Keep up with what is going on in your field Don’t get bogged down in the negative energy around you due to the economy Join local organizations such as The Chamber of Commerce, other civic groups, community groups. Check out local leadership programs that might be offered within your community I’M NOT A BIG FAN OF DR. PHIL, BUT LATELY, HE HAS HAD SOME GOOD ADVICE
FIND A MENTOR TO WORK WITH YOU! Find someone who is invested in your success Ask them to review your resume, vita, information file, whatever you keep but ask for their help and advise Keep your skills up to date! If your university/college offers free tuition, take a class that will help you professionally and/or personally
Personal, Non-Professional Development is Important Stop and enjoy nature –attend a one day, personal retreat, go hiking, canoeing, anything to get you out of the day to day office activity
