Design-based research • Design-based research (DBR) studies learning-in-context • 2 main aims: design usable artefacts that affect learning and further existing theories of learning • DBR takes an iterative approach: cycles through design, implementation, data gathering, analysis and re-design • DBR requires a lot of time and resources - it’s not an easy solution! Understanding the technology Affordance = perceived use of technology / functionality of technology Affordance = 0 / functionality of technology Doctoral Consortium, ICLS 2008
Data gathered to date • Notes and running analyses of development of ThinkSpace • Observation notes from lessons • Students’ wiki pages and maps • Interviews with groups of students • Interview with the teacher Doctoral Consortium, ICLS 2008
Questions for you: • Is it possible to ‘get a bite of all the layers of the cake’? • - and if yes: how? • How can I integrate multiple levels of analysis to gain insight about both the influence the tool has on students’ learning AND on the context in which this learning is happening? It’s a mouthful! Doctoral Consortium, ICLS 2008
