Cryogenic Dark Matter Search Remote Controlled DAQ Rupak Mahapatra UC Santa Barbara (for the CDMS Collaboration) CHEP 2003
Overview • CDMS Experiment • Data Acquisition Challenge • Goals of the DAQ • Tools to achieve these goals • Status CHEP 2003
Cryogenic Dark Matter Search • Dark Matter: Where is the Missing Mass of the Universe? Rotation Curves Imply Much More Mass • Strongest candidate: Super-Symmetric Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) > 40 GeV • Super-Sensitive Cryogenic Ge & Si Phonon & Ionization Detectors with ~5keV Sensitivity • CDMS-I @ SUF: Limited by Neutron Background • CDMS-II in a 3000ft Deep Mine in Soudan, MN CHEP 2003
DAQ Challenge in Soudan, MN • Experiment Location: A Challenge for Having Expertise Available On-Site • Limited Mine Accessibility: Can Not Get Control of Experiment on Demand CHEP 2003
Need Remote Controlled DAQ • Provide Means to Remotely Control & Monitor: A Virtual Control Room @Anywhere On Demand • Not Only Provide Control From Outside the Mine, But Also Bring in The Expertise To The Mine By Providing Them Remote Access, Using Internet • Have Experts Diagnose & Fix Problems Remotely • In Normal Running No Need to Have Experts On Site, Provided We Can Have Them When Needed CHEP 2003
Innovation is the key This, the dream …..
Tools of This DAQ • Needed a Distributed, Platform Ind., Networked Control System, Using Internet For Remote Access • Used JAVA, C++ AND CORBA To Achieve This • Hardware Servers Written in JAVA & C++ • CORBA and JAVA RMI for Inter Process Calls • Developed Universal Communication Modules • Remote GUIs and Plots in JAVA using RMI CHEP 2003
New DAQ Benefits • Remote Control: Innovative and Crucial • Internet based access allows anywhere-control • Reduces need for extended onsite presence • Exploit the Internet • Complete Platform Flexibility: Win, Mac, Unix. • Modern language (JAVA) Allows This • Highly Modular & Scalable Software Framework • Easy and inexpensive to adapt and develop • No major modifications needed for adding components
How This Works • Download client software from web-page • Client software talks to Run Control server (via Internet) running on mine computer • Run Control then conducts the orchestra of all software components running on mine computers to do the experiment CHEP 2003
