Agenda 2| Microsoft Confidential What is Exchange UM?What is it not? Howdoes Exchange UM work? Howdoes Exchange Online UM differ from on-premises? How do you get up and running with UM Online? Whereandwhenwill Exchange Online UM be available? Q & A
History 3| Microsoft Confidential • Exchange UM = Exchange Unified Messaging • Voice mail in e-mail Inbox, access to both over the phone • One storage infrastructure (Exchange) • One transport infrastructure (Exchange) • One identity infrastructure (Active Directory) • One configuration infrastructure (based on PowerShell) • First included with Exchange 2007 • Extended in Exchange 2010 • Plans for Online UM announced at Office 365 launch
UM is a Replacement for Voice Mail 5| Microsoft Confidential • Voicemail in the Inbox (Message creation from the phone) • Voice messages and missed calls appear in e-mail clients • Outlook 2007 and 2010 (special voicemail rendering) • Outlook Web App (special voicemail rendering) • Exchange ActiveSync clients (many smartphone platforms, incl. WP7) • Voice Mail Preview (7 language packs) • Text inserted into voice message automatically from audio recording • Outlook Voice Access (Message retrieval from the phone) • Voicemail, E-mail, Calendar, Contacts, Directory, Options • Speech-enabled interface (26 language packs) • Messages: Read (play), reply(-all), forward, call sender, delete etc. • Meetings: Read, accept, decline, send “I’ll be X minutes late”, etc. • Directory, Contacts: Call, send message, play details, etc. • Great for hands-free triage (e.g. while walking or driving)

More UM Call Answering Features 7| Microsoft Confidential • Call Answering Rules • UM-enabled user customizes caller interface • Multiple rules allowed per user • Specify conditions: • Who’s calling; when the call arrives; free/busy status etc. • Record custom greetings • Create menu for callers to choose from: • Leave a message, transfer call, try to find user (while caller holds) • Automated Attendants • Easily contact someone in an organization without knowing their direct dial number
Outlook Voice Access 8| Microsoft Confidential Speech-enabled access to Exchange from any phone, anywhere
UM is not the PBX • UM does not provide “dial tone” • Customers who run UM today must use one or more of: • Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007/R2 • Microsoft Lync™ Server 2010 • PBX + VoIP gateway that is interoperable with UM • IP PBX that is interoperable with UM • Current list at “Telephony Advisor for Exchange 2010” • http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee364753.aspx • UM Systems Integrators have demonstrated other integrations
UM: Attraction to Org Admins 11| Microsoft Confidential • Same admin tools and techniques as the rest of Exchange • Based around PowerShell • Everything is scriptable • RBAC: 3 UM admin roles “out of the box”, can make more • Policy framework for UM user capabilities • Management pack for Microsoft System Center • Reporting built into Exchange Control Panel
UM Uses Voice-over-IP Telephony “trunk” interface Voice-over-IP protocols 12| Microsoft Confidential UM works with many types of telephony/communications server
UM Uses Voice-over-IP Telephony “line” interface Telephony “trunk” interface Voice-over-IP protocols 13| Microsoft Confidential For traditional PBXs, must use a gateway to connect to UM
UM Uses Voice-over-IP Telephony “trunk” interface Voice-over-IP protocols 14| Microsoft Confidential • For IP-PBXs, don’t need VoIP gateway • But IP-PBX must meet UM’s SIP interoperability requirements
UM Uses Voice-over-IP Telephony “trunk” interface Voice-over-IP protocols 15| Microsoft Confidential • For OCS or Lync, don’t need VoIP gateway for UM • But OCS/Lync needs Gateway for telephone network access
Voice-over-IP Works over Distance Voice-over-IP protocols are designed to work well with network latency, jitter and packet loss 16| Microsoft Confidential UM can be separated from telephony/communications servers
UM Online runs in MS Datacenters Voice-over-IP protocols can also work well over public IP networks 18| Microsoft Confidential Voice-over-IP to/from UM Online runs over the public IP network
