ATTRIBUTIONS The process of trying to explain observed behaviour in terms of a particular cause FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PREJUDICE
1. Fundamental Attribution ERROR (Gilbert & Malone, 1995 / Ross, 1977) Overestimating the influence of personal characteristics and underestimating the influence of the situation, when trying to explain a person’s behaviour eg. A school kid is arguing with the ticket inspector on a train. The other passengers conclude that school kids are argumentative and disrespectful. They disregard the situation that the school kid is in. FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PREJUDICE
2. JUST WORLD HYPOTHESIS (LERNER, 1980) The tendency to believe that they live in a world where people generally get what they deserve. The victim is blamed rather than the situation they find themselves in. eg. A school kid is blamed for being late because they are lazy rather than the public transport system being at fault FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PREJUDICE
