Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count • Funded originally by the Lumina Foundation (original startup and subsequent on-going support) • 14 major partners – including AACC, MDC, CCRC, Nellie Mae, Heinz Foundation, etc. • Started in 2004 with 27 colleges (FL, NM, NC, TX, VA) plus coaches and data facilitators/coaches • 2005 – 8 colleges (CT & OH) • 2006 – 23 colleges (PA, WA, & TX…including 3 open admission 4-year institutions) • 2007 – 26 (AR, HI, MA, MI, OK, SC, TX, VA) • 1 development yr. & 4 implementation yrs.

  3. Achieving the Dream Goals Overall • Efforts at participating colleges • Research into effective practices at community colleges • Public policy work • Outreach to the communities, businesses, and the public

Achieving the Dream’s Efforts to Use Data to Drive Change • Focuses colleges and others on understanding and using data better to improve student outcomes • Encourages colleges to have open dialogues about what is happening on their campuses • Tries to foster a culture of evidence at the colleges

Using Data to Drive Change cont’d • Encourages colleges to make every decision based upon student outcomes (from educational teaching strategies to allocation of resources) • Encourages institutions to: • Be open and forthright about current performance • Set measurable goals that focus on student outcomes • Make lasting, institutional change to achieve student outcomes

  6. Achieving the Dream Goals For Students • successfully complete the courses they take; • advance from remedial to credit-bearing courses; • enroll in and successfully complete gatekeeper courses; • enroll from one semester to the next; • earn degrees and/or certificates. • http://www.achievingthedream.org

  14. Data needs to be accessible to decision makers

  15. Do not be afraid of failure…step out on faith……try new things!.
