  1. Family – An Invitation to Community (1 Timothy 3:1-16)

  2. Introduction • Marriage is about who God is and what God has done in His redemptive work • Children are placed in our homes that we may grow increasingly Christ-like

  3. Introduction • Families exist as communities to enable us to consecrate the earth • Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. (Genesis 1:28a) • Has not the LORD made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth. (Malachi 2:15)

  4. Home – God’s Factory for Producing Leaders

  5. Introduction • I Timothy 3:4-5, 12 – 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?) 12 A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well.

  6. Families – an invitation to building & leading godly communities

  7. Biblical Call for the Family • Call to community • Call to interdependence • Call to growth, healing & safety

  8. Call to Community • God created the basic community of the family (Genesis 1-2) • Home is the starting point by God’s Design (Deuteronomy 6) • Onslaught of the Institution (Home vs. Institution) • Preparing the foundations in the Home Community in order to move to the Church Community (1 Timothy 3:5)

  9. Call to Interdependence • Marriage reflective of the Godhead (Genesis 1:27; 1 Corinthians 11:3, 12) • Body of Christ reflective of the Godhead (John 17:20-23) • Onslaught of Functional Relationships (Personal vs. Functional Relationships) • Moving from Home Community to Church Community

  10. Call to Growth, Healing & Safety • All that applies to Biblical community applies to home communities (eg. John 13:34-35; Hebrews 10:25; 1 Timothy 3:1-16) • Family is to be a context of love, unity, and protection (John 17; Ephesians 6) • Onslaught of the Hardened & Offended Heart (Matthew 24:10; Proverbs 4:23) • Moving our hearts in Home Community to our hearts in Church Community

  11. Reflection • Bring to mind those relationships within this community that reveal the condition of your heart. • Reflect how your heart issues may have originated from the home community. • Decide to seek & grant forgiveness in mutual submission that God’s name may not be shamed but be hallowed in His community at home and in the church.
