Purpose / Question What type of paper makes the best paper airplane?
Research How much does each type of paper weigh? How think is each type of paper? What is each type of paper made of? What model / shape airplane flies the best?
Hypothesis When a paper airplane made of computer paper is thrown, it will travel farther than an airplane made from notebook paper or construction paper. I think this because professional airplane builders use computer paper to create their airplanes to go far.
Materials 1 8 x 5 ¼ inch notebook paper 1 8 x 5 ¼ inch computer paper 1 8 x 5 ¼ inch construction paper Measuring Tape
Variables Dependent Variable (Stays the same throughout the experiment): Airplane size and model Independent Variable (Changes throughout the experiment): Material of Airplane
Procedure (Step by Step • Choose a model airplane to build and print off folding instructions. • Fold the notebook paper as directed on the instructions. • Repeat same steps for the computer and construction paper. • Practice a throwing routine/method that will be consistent throughout the experiment. (This should be done without an airplane to get “form” down.) (Starting point, holding spot, force and release point are consistent). • Throw all three airplanes. • Measure the distances each airplane was thrown. • Record data and repeat.
Analyzing Data Use these questions to help guide this part of the experiment: 1. What can be learned from looking at the data? 2. How does the data relate to the original hypothesis? 3. Did the independent variable cause changes in the results of the dependent variable?
Conclusion Conclusions are written to answer the original testable question proposed at the beginning of the investigation. They also explain how the student used science process to develop an accurate answer.
