Agenda • Problem Statement • Design Criteria • Conceptual Designs • Design Selection & Modification • Prototype • Conclusion
Problem Statement The goal of this project is to design and fabricate a caddy capable of launching, recovering, and storing a kayak from a dock in a safe and easy manner.
Design Criteria • Caddy should be mobile • No damage to the dock • Minimal user strength requirements • Able to lift a 60 lb. kayak • Ease of use • Safe
Modifications Rollers add unnecessary complexity: Replace with smooth ramp
Material Selection • Frame: • Base: angle iron • Ramp: Fiberglass • Ramp Cover: Plexiglas
Prototype: Compromises • Body Material: 2x2 wood • Ramp Cover: Masonite • No Ramp Spring • One Handlebar • All Parts Found at Home Depot
Conclusion • Prototype as Proof-of-Concept worked • No one & nothing hurt or damaged • No flipping or crashing into water • Robust design (Jen rated) • Even w/o spring, relatively easy to operate • Suggested Future Steps • Build prototype according to design specs • Repeat testing • Build it, and they will buy
