President message The Montreal Section's governing board will begin its nomination and election process of 2000-2001 officers this month. A Nominating Committee will be formed to select nominees to the leadership positions of the governing board. The work of this committee is vital to the continued strength and success of the section. In light of this activity, I wish to invite a limited number of interested members in good standing to join the committee. If you wish to participate or have questions on the nomination and election process, please feel free to contact me atyannick.montagano@honeywell.com before February 21. Our February activity will surely be of interest to a number of you. We have arranged for the visit of NewTech Brake. Many of you may already know of NewTech Brake. They are responsible for the development of a new, revolutionary brake: the full contact disc brake. Come join us and learn more about this home grown technology, which may one day bring your vehicle to a stop. In March, our student members will participate in our annual Karting Challenge, organized by our Student Affairs Committee. Look for the details in our next newsletter. February activity Join us on Monday, February 21, 7:00 pm, for our visit to the NewTech Brake company, located at 779 Industrial boulevard in Blainville. The company will introduce us to their new revolutionary braking system, along with a new type of ABS system named IBS (Intelligent Braking System). The tour is limited to 30 guests. Visitors will be divided into three groups of 10, each group concentrating on a specific department; namely the design, finishing and electronics (IBS) departments. A general overview of the company will also be presented to all in attendance. Directions are as follow: highway 15 north exit 25 which leads onto de la Seigneurie road, turn right on Industrial boulevard. Montreal Auto Show Mr. Yves Noël, technical instructor with Honda Canada, gave us “Insight” into Honda’s two new products for 2000. For those who just want to get from point A to point B in the most economical fashion, there is the INSIGHT. The Insight is the first vehicle to be sold in North America with a hybrid drivetrain: a combination of internal combustion engine and an electric motor. This combination produces a 3.5 litre / 100 km (80 mpg) fuel efficiency rating. The second Honda automobile is for people who just enjoy the pleasure of driving. The six-speed transmission in the 240-bhp S2000 Roadster keeps the high-revving engine in its optimum power band. The functional cockpit contrasts with the capable suspension, making this roadster a true driver’s car. For the 26 members and guests present, Mr. Noël handed out an extensive engineering package on the two vehicles and explained the importance of many design considerations. Following the dinner meeting there was still plenty of time to stroll around the auto show, viewing the numerous new models.
