He turned out nearly 50 volumes of essays and fiction • Became a millionaire • Married and had 2 daughters • Wife sued him for divorce in 1905 • Remarried and moved to Sonoma, CA • Nearly completed mansion burned down • Became an alcoholic and suffered kidney disease and depression • Took a lethal dose of narcotics in 1916, fell into a coma and died Success and Hardship
