HPPL Interesting Facts • 1900- 35 books destroyed due to contagion • 1918- Library closed for 6 days for coal strike and 16 days for influenza epidemic • 1905 cornerstone from Carnegie building placed inside 1930 Cornerstone- which cannot be opened until the year 5105 A.D. as specified in the 1905 HPPL News lettter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAT8WWaES78&feature=youtu.be • HPPL had 400 reproductions of paintings that you could borrow with your library card for 6 weeks
Celebrating 125 years • Jane Conway, Director of HPPL contacted Cecilia • Wanted to showcase rich history of the HPPL for 125th anniversary • 2 events to promote and celebrate the history of the library
History Room All archives are stored within the historical room at HPPL Houses history of the library, Highland park and surrounding counties Arranged in acid free folders in file cabinets by subject Dedicated to Jesse Lowe Smith Built by the WPA
What We Did? • Assessed the collection • Researched the history of the library • Marked what we thought would be interesting for the exhibit • Categorized by groupings: • History of the library building • Operations of the library • Community outreach/ programming
What we still need to do? • Create Exhibit placards describing each object • Arrange and highlight objects within the 6 display cases in the library
What we would have liked to do? • Online exhibit of artifacts • Scanned and digitized items • Had an online/ interactive portion of the exhibit • Highlighted the other interesting artifacts and documents that the history room houses such as newspaper articles from the day after the Chicago Fire, campaign poster from Lincoln’s presidential election
