DON’T LOOK HERE Brian Quan & Nathan Waddington
Ambient Video Ambient video must meet the following criteria: • be visually engaging on first viewing • never require your attention • reward attention at any time with visual interest • sustain over a great number of repeated viewings [Bizzocchi 2008]
“Ambient works must be ‘interesting’ and ‘ignorable’” [Brian Eno, as quoted by Bizzocchi J. Nov 2008]
Concept • From the concept of ignorable and not requiring your attention, we bring in ideas of the light bulb in the fridge and Schrodinger’s cat • Don’t look here is an installation which reacts to the number of people watching an ambient video being presented. • The system does nothing when being directly observed, working on the principle of ignorability, it does more with fewer people looking on, and will stop if too many people are watching.
Pseudo Code If there are no faces detected for x seconds then ambient video does <something> (for instance, slowly start up if stopped) If a face is detected for y seconds (time in place as a sort of debounce) then ambient video does <something else> (for instance, if started, stop) If more than one face is detected for y seconds then ambient video does <yet something else>
