Campaigns • Politicians need to get their message across to the public in order to win elections. • In the past public appearances and news papers were the way to reach the public • Today TV is the most effective way to reach a vast amount of voters • One thirty second spot can reach more people than a candidate will see in every public appearance.
Campaign commercial • Campaign commercial usually take two forms: • Light a fluffy: No real information just a vague reference to the greatness of the candidate. May use words like “family man, strong values, freedom and liberty” • Negative Ads. Tells how bad the other candidate will be if elected. Also called mudslinging.
Do TV ads work? • Studies show that candidates who spent the most on TV ad almost always win the election. • Although candidates start their campaigns with the warm and fuzzy ads they almost always end their campaigns with the negative ads. • Candidates usually spend 90% of their budget on TV ads!
How much money is spent? • A general rule of thumb is that an candidate needs at least a million dollars to run a campaign. • Hillary Clinton spent 50 million for her seat in New York. A job that pays about 100,000 a year. • Presidential candidates will spend about 50-70 million each on TV ads alone in the up coming elections.
