Presentation to the New Nigeria Foundation Board September 10, 2002Lagos, Nigeria By Citizens International 1729 King Street, Suite 100 Alexandria, VA 22314, USA
Overview of NNF and CIPrograms and Relationship CHRONOLOGY: • Brian Atwood and Joseph Kennedy met with President Obasanjo in August 1999, in response to his request for assistance while the major international donors mobilized • Grants secured from the United Nations Foundation and UNDP to establish NNF and launch programs - $2.4 million • NNF established December 2000 and NNF Board convened • NNF Managing Director selected and approved by Board, February 2001
New Nigeria Foundation GOAL: • Help establish a new, transparent, not-for-profit Nigerian organization to create public-private partnerships in support of Nigerian economic and social development
External Prospects for NNF/CI Collaboration in 2003 • Gates II for $2.5 million over 2.5 years • UNF III (amount to be determined) • Food for Progress (U.S. Department of Agriculture) - Sales of Non-Fat Dried Milk - $11.7 million over three years (9,000 tons at 3,000 tons per year) • Global Fund for $7 million over 5 years
Current Issues • How to create a sustainable NNF: - Includes both professional capacity and financial viability - Redefining the CI role • Reconfiguring Existing NNF/CI Relationship - Continue to mobilize external resources - Assist in program and project design as requested - Play a role in program and project evaluation - Partner in contracts on case by case basis - Both organizations free to seek out other partners
