A battery may go ‘DEAD’ from many different causes. • A ‘BOOST’ may be used to start a vehicle with a dead battery. • Proper equipment and procedures are required to safely boost a battery.
WARNINGS: • NEVER smoke near a battery. • DO NOT boost a frozen, cracked or leaking battery. • Battery explosion and/or damage to electrical components can result from improper cable connections. • ALWAYS connect the ground cable last, to avoid creating sparks. • A spark can cause a battery explosion and injury.
ALWAYS make sure to connect positive (RED +) to positive (RED+). • ALWAYS connect negative (BLACK -) to engine or frame ground.
Position vehicle with GOOD battery close to ‘DEAD’ vehicle, but NOT touching. • Turn ALL electrical accessories OFF in both vehicles.
Connect the RED POSITIVE (+) cable clamp to the dead battery (+) and the other RED POSITIVE (+) to the good battery (+). • Connect the BLACK NEGATIVE (-) cable clamp to the battery (-) on the vehicle with the ‘GOOD’ battery. • Connect the BLACK NEGATIVE (-) cable clamp to the frame or engine ground on the vehicle with the ‘DEAD’ battery.
Make sure ALL items are clear of any moving parts. • Start engine of car with ‘GOOD’ battery and allow to run for a couple minutes. • This will ‘CHARGE’ the dead battery.
Start the engine of the vehicle with the ‘DEAD’ battery. • Allow the engine to run for at least a minute, before disconnecting the cables.
PROPERLY disconnect the cables in this order: • NEGATIVE (-) from ‘DEAD’ vehicle FIRST, • NEGATIVE (-) from ‘GOOD’ vehicle next, • POSITIVE (+) from ‘DEAD’ vehicle next, • POSITIVE (+) from ‘GOOD’ vehicle last.
IF the boosted vehicle DIES when the cables are disconnected, it will require further repairs… possibly an alternator. • Carefully drive vehicle for a short distance, to charge battery, before shutting engine OFF.
