  2. The War of 1812 • Causes: • Impressment • Native American Attacks • The War Hawks

  3. 1. Impressment • Is: • A form of legal kidnapping where people are forced into military service • Britain would capture American sailors and force them into military service on the Atlantic Ocean

  4. 2. Native American Attacks • Lead by Tecumseh • All the Indians needed to unite in order to get land back • Goal • Wanted to protect & get their land back • Manipulated by the British to fight • Still had British forts in the American Frontier (the west)

The War of 1812 • U.S. Army • Poorly funded • Tried to invade Canada 3 times but failed • U.S. Navy • Did very well – captured 4 British ships • Key Battles • Battle of Lake Erie – won by Oliver Perry • Battle of the Thames – won by William Hennery Harrison • Beat Tecumseh • Battle of New Orleans – won by Andrew Jackson • Stressed “Nationalism” • A feeling of pride or patriotism for your country

  7. War of 1812 • Britain Invades: • Washington D.C. • Try to burn to ground • Treaty of Ghent • Ends the War • Basically a “Cease Fire” • No one wins • Old borders stay the same
