  2. Possible Impressionism Exam Questions and Answers What style of music is this extract? Impressionism When was it written? 1880 – 1920 Where? France Possible composers Debussy and Ravel Comment on: Harmony Ambiguous - Parallel Chords (7ths, 9ths, 11th, 13th) Use of note clusters – groups of notes close together Use of sustained chords Tonality Ambiguous – whole tone and pentatonic scales and modes Instrumentation Composers created new timbres – focused on finding new sounds and using not normally-used instrumental registers. Melody Not usually long phrases. More ‚snippets‘ of melody which appear from and back into the harmony and chords. Dynamics Even more varied and precise than before – composers used p,pp,ppp and pppp. General: Works were usually programmatic – inspired by nature, often water or clouds, transient things. Emphasis on sound (timbre) and musical colour rather thank on clear melody and harmony.
