This van was driving from Muscat to Marmul. A tire blew and it rolled over. Driver and passenger were wearing their seat belts. Both came out with minor injuries (cuts and bruises). Seatbelts saved 2 lives. Again!!
There was NO screen between cargo space and cabin. The cargo was not secured. Both persons were lucky that these loose items did not kill them.
Some other problems identified AFTER this crash: • No journey management in place • With better planning the journey could have been avoided: material by truck, technicians by bus or flight • The van was speeding: no speed limiter fitted • No RAS inspection/sticker
Discuss in your team: • Do your vehicles comply with RAS? Your (sub)-contractor’s? Have you checked it? • What trips do you and your contractors “have to make”? • How can your team reduce the km’s you “have to drive”? • Have you thought about better alternatives: flights, bus, combining with another contractor/team? • BUT THE MAIN THING WE LEARNED AGAIN: • SEAT-BELTS SAVE LIVES: ONLY IF YOU WEAR THEM !! • Drive to Survive
