History and Origin • There are two types of cancer: • Small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer • Lung cancer’s origin is normally linked back to cigarette smoking (including second-hand smoke) or pollution • Lung cancer was almost nonexistent in the early 1900’s, it wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century that lung cancer became a common problem • This was largely due to the multiplied production of tobacco prior to WWI • The annual diagnosis rate of lung cancer has increased more than any other cancers in the past decade
Signs and Symptoms • Symptoms: • Cough that doesn’t go away or gets increasingly worse • Trouble breathing • Chest pain • Coughing up blood • Hoarse voice • Lung infections (pneumonia) • Fatigue • Weight loss
How long does it last? • If not treated, it will eventually kill you. • If caught in time, it can be removed. • Cancer will stay with you until it is treated. Lung cancer cells…
Treatment • Staging • To determine the treatment best for you doctors may conduct: • CT scans • Bone scans • MRI’s • Pet scans • Surgery • Removes tumor tissues • Radiation Therapy • High-energy rays kill cancer cells • Chemotherapy • Use of anticancer drugs • Targeted Therapy • Use of drugs to block growth of cancer cells MRI of the Lungs
