What is Change? • Is it good or bad? • Beneficial or Harmful?
Managing Change • People generally do not change • Some people handle change better than others • Managers can start the learning process by demonstrating a good, positive attitude, and consider the following:
The 5 C’s • Commitment • Control • Challenge • Connection • Communication
Commitment • A clear sense of purpose • Can help you redirect efforts in line with the current change • Key Questions: • What is the main goal of the task you are completing? • Mission statement • Why did you run for this position?
Control • … grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Challenge • Try to view change as an opportunity • You get to learn new skills and to grow • Have a positive attitude about what has happen and relay it to your board
Connection • Make sure your board feels that they are part of a large whole • A team working together. • Reassurance! & Compliments!
Communication is Key Lack of Communication is the best way to alienate or anger your board Open and honest communication can go a long way in keeping your board comfortable in their role
Communication is Key • Give people as much information as possible, as soon as possible. • Even if the information is unpleasant, share it! • Be accurate & clear!
The 5 C’s • Commitment • Control • Challenge • Connection • Communication
Take care of yourself • You are going through the same changes as your board. • Consult with others- Take advantage of everyone’s problem solving skills • You don’t need to have all the answers!
Delegate! - show trust in your board by allowing them to help you! (Give yourself a break) • Rest! - Stress consumes a great deal of energy • Talk to family & friends- keep in perspective the importance of those people close to you
Keep a Balance • Look beyond the details • Survey the “big picture” for your own sense of direction
Chapter Exercise • Planning travel to FRC. • And 2 weeks before the conference • 16 people paid for registration by assigned deadline • You have 4 hotel rooms – paid for by your Engineering Dean • Rented a bus for all your chapter members, Maximum 25 people on bus
Chapter Exercise • 4 more people want to attend conference, have paid registration and expect you to cover their travel • Engineering Dean can only fund 2 out 4 rooms now • Day of 2 of your board members show up late and miss the bus • 6 people show up trying to get on the bus, stating they paid registration
