Services Description • Wireless voice and data • Nationwide and 100% in 12 Bay Area counties • Customers include governments, emergency services, businesses and individuals • Regulatory Requirements • All site (almost) must have a Conditional Use Permit • Air Quality regulations restrict use of generators • Hazardous materials (batteries/fuel) • Electromagnetic emissions standards • Major Suppliers • Alcatel Lucent • Ericsson • Cisco • Juniper
Dependencies • Electric Power • Primarily PG&E • Transport Circuits (links between cells, switches and the outside world) • Verizon Business • Level 3 • Comcast • ATT • others • Transportation (roads) • Fuel (primarily diesel)
Who depends on VZW • Anyone customer wanting service • Emergency Services • Verizon Critical Response Team (VCRT) in place • Police • Fire • Health • Every other utility • Government entities • Businesses • Individuals
Address Challenges • Get as self sufficient as possible/practical • All cell sites have batteries • Most sites have generators • Challenges in some areas • Lots of built in redundancy • SONET Rings • Layer 3 routing • Alternate paths • Build Relationships with CI providers • Have COWs, COLTs, GOATs and RATs • Emergency microwave • Resources available on a national scale • CUEA Member
Potential Gaps • Knowledge of immediate post-event conditions • Roads: Repair sites, delver fuel/COWs/COLTs • Condition of building where site located/accessibility • Power Issues: commercial power or site issue? • Transport circuits: Has vendor detected the problem? • Expected recovery times • Transportation to repair sites, deliver fuel or generators, COWs/COLTs. • Emergency Services priorities • Command centers, shelters… • Restricted Area Access
