Metering & Monitoring System • Metering system • Broad market potential of the Neighborhood Area Network(IEEE802.15-08-0506, July 2008) • Local governments or utility companies • KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation), KOGAS (Korea Gas Corporation), and K-Water • Emergency monitoring system • Temperature measurement, Fire detection, Facilities status monitoring… • Potential applications in Korea • Utility company • Electric Power System (Plant, Transmission, Distribution), GAS, Water • UIS(Urban Information System) • Chemical plant
Potential Applications in KOREA • Utility company(Electric Power System), UIS, Chemical plant
System monitoring and management Voltage/current/temperature, Fire Easy to install and maintain Node-to-node : Wireless connection (IEEE802.15.4) Node-to-backbone : Wireless & Wired (WLAN,LAN,RS232) Gateway Control Center HMI (Human Machine Interface) Meter & Sensor Case 1: Electric Power System – Pilot Program of KEPCO • WLAN, LAN, RS232
Case 2: UIS(Urban Information System) in Korea • Management of ground facilities • Streetlight, Guardrail, Tunnel, Bridge, Underground Roadway, … • Provide image information for circumstantial recognition around facilities Tunnel Icy road Accident Streetlight
Streetlight, Guardrail, Tunnel, Bridge, Underground Roadway, … ① ② ③ ① ② ③ ④ ④ Ground Facilities Management - Case 2
Gateway Sensor Node • Monitoring of Surface Facilities • Support Different types of Sensors Interfaces : ADC, I2C, SPI • IEEE 802.15.4 PHY/MAC Support • Sensors • Temperature, Vibrations, Light, Moisture • Size : 47x87x35mm(WxHxD • Relaying the Management Information of Surface Facilities • Core Network Interfaces : Ethernet, Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11b), CDMA • Integration with Image Processing Devices for Circumstantial Recognition around Facilities • Protocol Conversion between IP Networks and Wireless Sensor Networks • External Case for Waterproof : 350x470x245mm(WxHxD)
Summery • Two potential applications for the NAN • Electric power system • Urban information system • Now the legacy LAN or CDMA based solution is used between gateway and backbone network. • Coverage : dense or long distance networks • Costly • If the NAN covers geographically widespread communications to a large number of outdoor devices, gateway to backbone networks can be replaced with the NAN.
