Eco Education Project Title: “Improving school environment with focus on Eco Education in the context of Climate Change” by GSS, Plan India and Panasonic Goal:-Twenty four project villages would develop eco-education initiatives and take actions by involving children, communities, CSOs and Govt as change agents Key Activities:-The activities to achieve the objectives are combination of Hard, Soft and Green Measures .

Specific Objectives: • To developand orient the locally relevant environment education module developed by Panasonic and Plan India in local language • To form and strengthen the Children Eco Clubs in 24 villages • To capacitate the children as change agents for environment sustainability by addressing the climate change impacts in the village and school. • To ensure accessibility to sanitation and drinking water facilities • To create an eco friendly environment in schools by protecting the surrounding Natural Resources • To impart awareness on climate change to children and community

Activities: • Needs Assessment conducted in all the project villages to identify and address environment concerns • Environment Vulnerability mapping has been done at school and community level • Formed/Strengthened Eco-clubs at school level and Environment Protection Committees at village level • Facilitated multi stake holder meetings (Dist Admin, PRIs, youth groups etc) and shared needs assessment and environment vulnerability reports for collective action • Initiated G0-NGO-PRI actions such as sanitation drives, water management, clean environment in villages • Developed peer groups as awareness and education groups and submitted collective representations for water and sanitation facilities in villages

Cont… • Children, parents and teachers and PRI members along with Dist Admn celebrated Earth Day, World Environment Day in project villages • Initiated school and community level green measures such as plantation, kitchen gardens, diverting waste water to plantation, one child – one tree plantation campaigns in villages within 8 months of the project, • So far…(Within 8 months) • 164 plants were planted in 8 villages by children and EPC • 379 families have applied for construction of Individual Sanitary Latrines under the Gov supported scheme • 75 families, who were not using the toilets have started using them. • 10 families started kitchen gardens promotion • 24 families being started the construction of the toilets.

  6. Earth Day experiences by children “ • I was very happy to participate in the Earth day walk. This is the first time I participated in this type of program. I got the knowledge on importance of the plantation.” Appalaraju, Class 5 • “It was a pleasure to participate in the Earth Day walk, after the walk we have planted trees in the village” Divya, Class 5 • “This is first time that I have participated in this type of walk. I never heard about Earth Day, so I really thank GSS, Plan, Panasonic. We have conducted rally through the village, all the villagers asked me about the importance of the walk & I explained about the importance of planting trees.” DhanaLakshmi Class 8 • .

Reflections from Children, teachers and Community • “ Now, Ihave learned about water management; I learnt that India comes under very high stress category for availability of waterand we should save water” Ramanamm, Class 5 • “The eco education project modules were very useful to children and adults, even the community could understand the module through pictures on the module”.
